BUSH WANTS TO DEBATE, JUST NOT A LOT
By Stockton
President Bush has indicated he may skip one of three Presidential Debates. "The middle one," said the President. "I think all we need is two, a debate and then a rebate."
Experts believe Bush and his team are once again playing the expectations game. "This is all about the perception many have that Bush is a poor debater," said political consultant Ed Kendall. "If you remember, Bush lowered expectations in his debates with Al Gore so much that all Bush had to do was show-up, know his name, know what state he was governor of and not drool on himself. Bush accomplished three out of four of those goals. He looked like a winner."
Most experts believe Bush will attend all three debates. "He'll be there for the middle debate," says Kendall. "Unless he's crashing from a coke high."
The Bush camp insists it's not playing the expectations game with the debates. "We feel the American people value consistency," said spokesman Matthew Dowd. "President Bush has skipped just about one-third of everything; his presidency, National Guard duty, his AA meetings, you name it. He's no flip-flopper."
